Walmart is working to fix an intersection drivers say is too dangerous in Cape Coral. According to Cape Coral Police, there have been at least nine crashes at the crossing of Pine Island Road and Hibiscus Drive since the store opened at the end of August. Drivers and neighbors said that number is too high and demand something be done.
FDOT reports Walmart is doing a traffic study, during the season, to see if a traffic light needs to be put at the intersection. The answer to that question is a no-brainer, drivers said. "It's a pain going out in the middle because you get stuck there with five to 10 people in the middle all the time,” said Brittany Hobbs. “And nobody wants to go anywhere because they don't want to get hit.” The information Walmart gathers during their study will be sent to FDOT, which will make a final decision.
Walmart will pay for any updates to the intersection. Why are the Feds or Florida taxpayers not paying?
The dangerous intersection phenomenon exists near hundreds of big-box retailers across the US. Search our BadIntersections.com database and find them.
