FIU Florida Instant Bridge Idea Maybe Not Fully Tested?

FIU installed a new pedestrian bridge over the perilous Tamiami Trail in a single morning, part of a project to provide students a safe crossing and directly connect its main campus to Sweetwater. Pedro Portal The Miami Herald

Instant bridge? Not quite, but in a single morning, Florida International University dropped a new elevated pedestrian span into place over the Tamiami Trail to provide students a safe route over the perilous roadway for the first time.

Once it’s finished in early 2019, the new pedestrian bridge will link FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus directly to the small suburban city of Sweetwater, where the university estimates 4,000 of its students live.

The 950-ton span was then picked up, moved and lowered into place by special gantry cranes at the intersection of Southwest 109th Avenue in an operation that lasted several hours Saturday morning. A section of the Trail, also designated as Southwest Eighth Street, was closed to traffic Friday evening for the bridge installation, and will remain shut until 5 a.m. Monday.

Companies behind instant bridge idea have a history of failures and lawsuits.

Walmart Funds Study to Add Traffic Light at Dangerous Florida Intersection

Walmart is working to fix an intersection drivers say is too dangerous in Cape Coral. According to Cape Coral Police, there have been at least nine crashes at the crossing of Pine Island Road and Hibiscus Drive since the store opened at the end of August. Drivers and neighbors said that number is too high and demand something be done.

FDOT reports Walmart is doing a traffic study, during the season, to see if a traffic light needs to be put at the intersection. The answer to that question is a no-brainer, drivers said. "It's a pain going out in the middle because you get stuck there with five to 10 people in the middle all the time,” said Brittany Hobbs. “And nobody wants to go anywhere because they don't want to get hit.” The information Walmart gathers during their study will be sent to FDOT, which will make a final decision.

Walmart will pay for any updates to the intersection.   Why are the Feds or Florida taxpayers not paying?

The dangerous intersection phenomenon exists near hundreds of big-box retailers across the US. Search our BadIntersections.com database and find them.

Florida Fatal Car Accidents Heatmap

Every year Florida leads the Nation with the most fatal car accidents at intersections.  Why is this?  Is it because of the older people driving and shouldn't be?  I would be curious if any studies have been done to analyze this fact.  Please post study links in the comments section.  This data was pulled from the FARS (Fatal Accident Reporting System).
